It was now late at night with the sun gone for the moon to appear. Everyone was getting anxious since it had been more than an hour Alberta fainted and was still not up. Although the family doctor had told them she would be fine, they couldn’t help but ask the doctor so many questions until they heard a cough and rushed to Alberta’s room. How are you feeling? Kinsley asked her to which she answers that she is fine. With tears in her eyes, she asked about the details of how their mum left since everything seemed to be intact. It was during this time their dad David Mensah, a thick tall man with a dark skin colour comes to the room after escorting the doctor to the door to ask the twins how they got home since they were not expected to come home until December. Alberta asks her father “why did mum leave”?. Refusing to answer the question posed to them by their Father. Calmly he tells them that he wouldn’t know since he is not in their mother’s memory to fish out her reason of leaving home and moreover their mum decided to leave so they were not to mention her name ever again in the house. He then throws the letters at them and walks out of the room. Confused at his fathers behaviour, Kinsley follows his dad to question him but stop midway when he turns to see his siblings, Albert and Alberta take the letters their dad left behind. After reading the content of the letters left behind, the twins cried for more than an hour. When calm, they asked themselves how their mum got to find out they knew about her sickness. Alarmed, Kinsley asked what sickness they were talking about since he could not comprehend what was written in the second letter. Alberta narrates to her brother Kinsley how she found out about their mums sickness. She narrates “it was mums birthday when I decided to surprise her like I usually do, so I went to her room to leave a cloth wrapped with a birthday card. I wanted to mix the card with her work files so I opened her drawer and as I was about to close it,……… the word “Korle-bu teaching hospital” written on an envelope caught my attention. I opened it to find out what was written and what I found out was that, mum was sick with leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant since she was almost at the last phase of her sickness. I ran to tell you but you were badmouthing mum as always to nanny so I told Albert, who said we should keep it a secret and wait for mum to tell everyone about it. We researched for things a leukemia patient needed and tried to give mum that. “If I knew she would leave, I would have told everyone beforehand, she sobs as turns to ask Kingsley a question. but if I had told you, would you Kinsley believe me “. She begins to cry all over again and Albert hugs her to console her. The realization and consequences of his own actions now hitting hard on him, he prevents his own tear from falling and tells his siblings to sleep since it was late, promising to return to them the next morning as he runs out of the house to the garden he falls to the ground and begins to remember his childhood memories with his mum. He touches a flower and remembers how his mum had thought him to water the garden getting closer to the Rose flower, memories of his mums teachings about the flower. A ton of the rose had pricked her finger which got him all worked out and wanted to cut down the flower but his mum had told him then that the flower was not to pay for the price.he cries so hard he ends up sleeping in grass till the next day. he stand up to go get himself water when he is almost at the kitchen, he hears someone say that i am happy i have finally gotten rid of that woman. the person laughs whole heartedly so Kingsley peeps to see the person saying this and when he does, he is shocked at the figure he sees.
